Local Support

Each year, Spring into Tawa is proud to support local groups and organisations in our community.  Spring into Tawa, at it's heart, is about community and so we look to support a strong and connected community.

We do this by providing local groups and organisations an opportunity to have a stall at the event to raise money and awareness for their cause.  We have kept the price of a community stall at the same low rate for four years now to enable as many groups as possible to be at the festival.

Donations to local causes

In addition, each year Spring into Tawa tries to make a donation to other local causes or events.  Up until and including 2016, a small donation was made from the surplus money from Spring into Tawa to the Tawa Community Light Party.  In 2017, we were able to donate $1,000 to the Tawa Community Patrol.

In 2018, we made a donation to the Tawa Youth and Families Trust from surplus funds from the event.  With the support of the Porirua Club and Xtreme X, we were able to also make donations to Menzshed Tawa and the Tawa Community Patrol.

2019 Local Causes - who should we support?

We would like to hear from the community who we should support through the event this year.  In June and July, we asked our followers on Facebook which worthy local organisations we should support.  The nominated groups are:

  • Bellyful Porirua
  • Outpawed
  • Wellington Rabbit Rescue
  • Tawa Salvation Army - The Christmas Hampers Drive

NB: Kiwi Community Assistance was nominated but chose to withdraw as they didn't want to compete with organisations that they supply to.  Wellington Emergency Response Team also withdrew from consideration as they're not able to take part in the event this year and felt it was more appropriate that this support go to a group involved on the day.

Outpawed

Our Mission is to protect cats and kittens that have been abused, abandoned or forgotten.

Here at Outpawed, we provide shelter for community/stray cats and kittens and aim to spay/neuter, socialise, vaccinate, microchip and find homes for as many of them as possible.

We are also involved in TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) for cats that cannot be integrated into a household environment. Where TNR is necessary, cats are released into managed colonies where they are fed and monitored.

We aim to work with local government and other animal welfare organisations to obtain the best outcome possible for the community/stray cat population. Our goal is to reduce this population over time through desexing and adoption.

If we were to to selected any donation would go towards our current tnr (trap neuter return) project where we are currently working to desex a colony of 26 cats. These cats are being desexed then returned to the area where they have a dedicated caretaker providing food and shelter to our feline friends.

Bellyful Porirua

Bellyful Porirua cook and deliver meals to families with newborn babies and families with young children who are struggling with illness, where there is little or no family or social support. Our branch delivers from Tawa to Pukerua Bay.

We cook meals here in Linden, and shop in Tawa New world. The support from Spring Into tawa would go directly into meal ingredients. We spend $500 a month to make 150 meals for over 30 families. We are completely volunteer run and rely on fundraising and local sponsers to fund us.

Wellington Rabbit Rescue

http://www.wellingtonrabbitrescue.org

https://www.facebook.com/wellingtonrabbitrescue/

Wellington Rabbit Rescue (WRR) is a registered not for profit charity that takes on abused, neglected, sick, injured, abandoned, and unwanted domestic rabbits.

Although we are Wellington based, WRR receives a number of requests for assistance in rehoming domestic rabbits across New Zealand. Recently we have received rabbits for rehome from Nelson and the Bay of Plenty districts.

A huge part of Wellington Rabbit Rescue's mission is to educate school children and families about how to care for rabbits and the details of what rabbits need for a healthy life. Rabbits are the third most popular pet (after dogs and cats), but they are the most misunderstood and most neglected. By educating children and families, WRR works to support rabbits and the people who care for them.

While they are in WRR’s care, they receive any veterinary treatment they may require. They are housed in large enclosures so they can exhibit natural rabbit behaviour, and they are fed a high-quality diet.

Once the rabbits are healthy and ready for adoption, they are desexed and vaccinated. Any rabbits that cannot be rehomed will remain in WRR’s care. WRR currently has three long term resident rabbits.

Unlike other animal rescues any rabbit adopted from WRR must be returned to us if the current owners are no longer able to care for it. This ensures that any rabbit that comes into the rescue has a guaranteed home for life.

Tawa Salvation Army - Christmas Hampers Project

https://www.facebook.com/tawasalvationarmy/

The Salvation Army here in Tawa provides support to members of our wider community with Food Parcels, school supplies and referrals for support such as budgeting, counselling and housing. We are open Tuesday to Thursday 9-1pm. We have programmes such as Mainly Music on Tuesdays for Pre-schoolers and their parents, A children’s art programme on Fridays and a youth programme that connect many families in the community together on a weekly basis.

Christmas time can be a strain on families and we provide Christmas Hampers to those in need in the Tawa community.

Last year we gave 50 Christmas Hampers to families.

In our Hampers we provide food for a week as well as nice ‘treats’ for the family to share and enjoy. We provide fresh produce and Chicken for a Christmas meal as well as presents for the children in the family.

This year we are aiming on providing another 50 Hampers in our community and with the support we get if nominated,  we will be able to increase the amount of families we support this Christmas.
